Scottish Government Guidelines for Ceremonies

The latest information on rules and guidance for people involved in planning a wedding in Scotland during COVID-19, including how many people can attend a ceremony and reception can be found on the Scottish Government website.

The maximum number of people who can attend a wedding ceremony or civil partnership indoors or outdoors in a public or staffed exclusive-use venue depends on the level for the area the venue is in.

Public and exclusive-use venues include places like:

  • hotels and restaurants
  • places of worship
  • registration offices
  • community centres and village halls
  • exclusive use private-hire venues like castles and stately homes that are managed and have venue staff to ensure this guidance is followed

Currently relaxations of the lockdown rules on marriage and civil partnership in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland allow:

  • In level 0 - a maximum of 200 people can attend the marriage or civil partnership.

  • In levels 2 and 3 - a maximum of 50 people can attend the marriage or civil partnership.
  • In level 4 - a maximum of 20 people can attend the marriage or civil partnership.
  • The total number of people attending a ceremony will be subject to social distancing and capacity of the venue.
  • Face coverings must be worn by all persons indoors.  The couple and the person leading the ceremony can remove their face coverings for the duration of the ceremony.  Face coverings do not need to be worn by the couple or person(s) escorting them into the ceremony
  • All persons attending a ceremony will be required to provide their name and contact telephone number as part of Test and Protect in Scotland.
  • All legal requirements for marriage and civil partnership in Scotland must be met including serving 29 days' notice of intention to marry or enter into a civil partnership
