The Ceremony

If you are being married in a civil marriage in Dumfries and Galloway, you may choose to have the Registrar's Standard Ceremony. You may wish to personalise your ceremony to incorporate a few special words or by adding a poem or reading.

Standard Vows

Our Registrars have vast experience in both the legal and the practical side of marriages and will be delighted to advise you on any aspect, from the documents you require to the personalisation of your ceremony.

All couples will receive our the standard marriage ceremonies take two forms, one for couples being declared husband and wife and one for same sex couples being declared married

We also offer 2 alternative marriage ceremonies which you can choose from and again these can be personalised with your own readings or poems and the Registration staff will be happy to advise you on this.

However there are certain legal declarations which you will have to say and, as you are having a civil marriage, you will not be able to have any religious content in the ceremony.

The ceremony lasts about 15 minutes but this can vary depending on what you choose to include in your ceremony. The order of service below gives a flavour of our civil marriage ceremony.

  • Exchange of Rings
  • Rings Declaration (optional)
  • Closing Words (optional)
  • Pronunciation
  • Signing of the Marriage Schedule

Our staff will make every effort to ensure that your day is both happy and memorable.

Guest should arrive about 15 minutes prior to the ceremony.

If you wish to have a ceremony other than the Standard Ceremony you must contact us in advance of your marriage date to arrange this. You can alter and personalise the marriage ceremonies by contacting our dedicated team of Civil Celebrants:-
